new faculty: Akron-AAUP welcomes you to the university of Akron
Getting to Know Your Faculty Union
As a new member of the full time teaching faculty you are also a new member of the “bargaining unit,” which is the group of faculty whose interests are represented by the Akron chapter of the American Association of University Professors (Akron-AAUP). As a member of the bargaining unit, you will enjoy the protections and assurances that the collective bargaining agreement guarantees you. These protections were negotiated by your colleagues on the Akron-AAUP Negotiation Team. In 2006 our faculty voted by a 70% majority to approve a fair share fee to be paid by all bargaining unit faculty. This modest fee is automatically deducted from your paycheck each month, and with this contribution you are supporting these local efforts. (see below and here for the difference between classification in the bargaining unit and full membership in the chapter.)
Collective Bargaining is Important, but it isn't the only reason we chose the AAUP as our representative. We also want to preserve academic freedom and the fundamental link that principle has to tenure and shared governance.
These concerns are the primary reasons for the existence of AAUP, a fact that resonates deeply with our faculty.
The national AAUP is the only national organization that exists for the sole purpose of guarding the integrity of higher education teaching professionals, specifically:
--to advance academic freedom and shared governance
--to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, and
--to insure higher education's contribution to the common good (see http://www.aaup.org/AAUP/about/)
You can support these principles directly by joining the chapter and becoming a member of both the local union and the national AAUP. Union membership is voluntary, and requires that you submit a membership form declaring that want to join. Doing so costs you approximately 17 dollars a month (for 9 months, and even less for 12 month faculty) in addition to your fair share fee. Your membership in the chapter will provide the national organization with the resources it needs to continue to defend the rights of the profession of university scholars. As a member, you are also eligible to vote on the next contract, and to run and vote for all elected positions in Akron-AAUP.
We know you will have questions and we hope you contact us at any time - by phone or via email. For now please take a tour this part of the chapter website and read through the documents by clicking on the links in the sidebar.
