Treasurer Election:

Due to the retirement of our Treasurer, Russ Davis, the Akron-AAUP chapter needs to have a special election for his interim replacement. This interim term of office will last until Spring 2008, when the Treasurer's position comes up for a full two-year election. Of course, the elected interim replacement could then run for the two-year term as well. Please nominate yourself or someone else by Friday, September 21th at 5pm. Send nominations to Steve Aby, Chair, Nominations and Elections Committee, at saby@uakron.edu, or call at x5171. If you are nominating someone else, please check with them to be sure they are willing to stand for election. Once nominations have closed, the chapter will mail out a ballot to all chapter members, allowing the required amount of time for ballots to be returned. Return to Top of page

All current departmental liaisons are reminded to hold elections among their department's chapter members by the end of the month of September.  Current liaisons will kindly remain in office until elections can be held.

Results of elections should be sent to doodle2@ameritech.net for posting to the chapter website.  Then, Liaisons are asked to meet on October 10th (Wednesday) 3-5 PM, Student Union Room 312, for the Fall 2007 Liaison Council Meeting, at which the 2007-08 membership campaign will be detailed, and a representative to the chapter executive committee will be elected.

Update on Merit Guidelines and Arbitration:

As of August 27, 2007, four departments/units remain that have not received approval of their merit guidelines. Akron-AAUP will work with any departments that request our assistance in completing the merit guidelines. Faculty in departments with approved merit guidelines that completed their merit evaluations for the 2005-2006 academic year should be seeing their raises in their paychecks.  Very soon all faculty should have completed their merit evaluations for the 2006-2007 academic year, and those raises will then be added to the next cycle of paychecks, including pay retroactive to the start of the fall 2007 semester.
Over the summer, Akron-AAUP and the Administration met with an arbitrator, Rob Stein, regarding the Merit Guidelines grievance. The crux of the grievance is that because of the delayed implementation of the salary increase, the University has earned interest on undistributed salaries that is, basically, the faculty’s.  Mr.Stein is the same person who served as fact-finder in the last stages of contract negotiation in 2005. No resolution has yet been reached, but discussions continue.

Workload Parity Achieved for Developmental Programs Faculty:

A grievance on behalf of the faculty in Developmental Programs has led the University and the Akron-AAUP to agree that for these faculty colleagues, as for others, a full load is 12 hours of instruction.  These faculty members have normally had higher loads, for which they had not received overload pay.  However, the contract includes language on the threshold for overload.  Since nothing in that language excluded Developmental Programs faculty, the Akron-AAUP argued that this provision should apply to them as well.  To its credit, the University agreed.  While these faculty members will continue to teach their typical load, they will receive overload payments for the hours above 12 hours per semester, as specified in Article 16 (Compensation), Section 15 (see the Akron-AAUP contract on our website at http://www.akronaaup.org/Contract/ctract.htm).

Progress on Market/Compression Raises:

Last July, a joint statement between Akron-AAUP and the UA Administration was sent to the faculty which detailed the process for completing market adjustment calculations. That statement is partially reprinted here:

The University and the AAUP are pleased to announce that appropriate benchmarking institutions have been determined, and the process of implementing the market/compression component of the 2006-2007 and the 2007-2008 annual raises will now begin.  This process will entail the following steps:

  • A determination will be made as to which disciplines are eligible for market/compression adjustments for the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 academic years.
  • Once the determination is made as to which disciplines are eligible for market/compression adjustments for the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 academic years, the process of distributing one-half of the departmental market/compression adjustment funds, in conformance with the formula set forth in Article 16, Section 9 of the collective bargaining agreement, will commence.
  • A written notice will be issued to each department chair instructing him or her to organize committees comprised of the chair and at least two elected bargaining unit members from the department in order to effectuate the allocation of the other half of the market/compression adjustment funds, as set forth in the last paragraph of Article 16, Section 9 of the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Departments should also be readying faculty merit scores based on faculty activity for 2006-2007.  Once the market adjustment is in place, followed by merit score calculation, faculty will then be in position to receive their merit salary increase for 2007-2008.
The University and the AAUP will strive to consummate the foregoing market/compression adjustment process for all colleges by September, 2007.  The Deans should be receiving the appropriations guidelines this week.  So departments will have to elect at least two faculty members to work with their chairs (or appropriate administrators) in how to distribute half of that small pool of funds, per our contract. Once this process has been completed, the market/compression component of both the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 annual raises will be implemented forthwith.
