Faculty at North Central State College Win Unionization Vote:

Our colleagues at North Central State College in Mansfield, Ohio, a two-year technical college in the Ohio state system, voted in a collective bargaining election on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 4th and 5th.  The vote, which was conducted by the Ohio State Employment Relations Board, was 58% in favor of collective bargaining representation by the campus AAUP chapter, with 95% of the faculty voting”  Thus, the NCSC Faculty Association (AAUP) is now the 11th institution in Ohio to engage in collective bargaining as an AAUP affiliate.  Congratulations to the faculty at North Central State for their very civil and high-minded campaign to reestablish shared governance at the NCSC campus.  Results and the chapter’s press release can be found at the NCSC faculty association web site (http://www.ncscaaup.org).

Chair Review and RTP Guidelines:

There are now many approved Chair Review Guidelines posted on our website (http://www.akronaaup.org/ChairReview/chairreview.htm). The RTP Guidelines are proving more problematic, however, and there are only two approved (http://www.akronaaup.org/RTP/RTP.htm). In some cases the administration is asking for substantive changes to RTP criteria that had been approved and in place prior to this contract. We remind faculty again that, according to the contract, RTP guidelines are supposed to be faculty-driven.  Furthermore, we encourage faculty to be vigilant against demands from administration for substantive changes that are not mandated by the contract.

If anyone at any administrative level attempts to mandate substantive changes in guidelines as a condition for approval of your RTP revisions, the Akron-AAUP believes that they are violating the contract and overstepping their bounds. Administrators may make suggestions - even substantial ones, but they cannot mandate them.  Each department will continue to use their old RTP criteria until new guidelines are approved, so there is no rush to get new guidelines in place. You can afford to fight for your principles in this extremely important document. If your department faculty believe that the administration is making unreasonable demands of your RTP Guidelines, you should notify your departmental liaison, who should then contact any Chapter officer with details.

Akron-AAUP Conducts Spring Elections:

The Akron-AAUP chapter is soliciting nominations for the upcoming April election of the Treasurer and Secretary. The term of office for these positions will be two years. You may nominate yourself or someone else for either position. Only Akron-AAUP chapter members are allowed to hold office or vote in chapter elections.  If you have yet to join the Akron-AAUP, now would be a great time.  You can print off a Membership and Dues Payment Election Form here: http://www.akronaaup.org/Membership/membership.htm

Nominations are due by 5pm on Friday, March 28, 2008. If you would like to nominate someone, please send your nomination to Steve Aby (Past President, Chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee) at saby@uakron.edu or steveaby@mac.com, or at 972-5171.  As stated in our Constitution, the election will be held by mail in the month of April. The Nominations and Elections Committee is Steve Aby (Past President, Chair), Dave Witt (Chapter Member), and Joe LaRose (Chapter Member).

In addition to the Chapter Officer elections, during the upcoming Spring semester chapter meeting, the membership will need to elect a delegate to the Collective Bargaining Congress. The chapter delagate represents Akron-AAUP at two meetings a year in Washington, D.C. and casts our chapter's votes in national referendums.

Correction from the February Newsletter:

Faculty in Developmental Programs now have a 12 hour load each term, like other faculty, as opposed to what was a 16 hour load in the Fall and a 12 hour load in the Spring.  We had mistakenly reported that they were receiving overload pay for course loads over the 12 hours per semester.  However, the Summit College administration did not agree to a request to allow such overloads.

Plans for AAUP Summer Institute 2008:

Last year the chapter funded three chapter members to Reno, Nevada for three days of intensive training and focused workshops. We'd like to do so again this summer. For any chapter member interested in moving into leadership roles in the local chapter, this is an excellent opportunity to appreciate all that AAUP does for you and the profession. This year the Summer Institute is scheduled for July 24-27 at the University of Rhode Island.
